PMA/ Project Sharing 2015

The PMA/Project sharing session was held on 26 September 2015 with over 40 students attended. Three 2015 graduates Apoorv Agarwal, Abraham Wang and Bonnie Lam were invited for presentation. Apoorv and Abraham both gave some intensive guidelines on PMA while Bonnie focused on the preparation of Project. The Q&A section was a treasurable platform for the speakers to share with the students some tips and their practical experience during the study path.

Shen Zhen Kin Yat Factory Co. visit

Jointly organized by HKIE (MI Division) and our Alumni Association, the technical visit to Kin Yat Factory was held effectively on 12 September 2015 with over 30 participants. Our ExCo member cum Executive Director of Kin Yat, Mr. Vincent Fung, hosted a tour through the SMT electronic assembly floors, injection molding shop, traditional work-bench typed assembly lines and the new incremental “smart” production building. During the presentation section, the experience of transforming a factory from making toys into AI robotic products was introduced. The upgrading of the hardware for Lean manufacturing capability with big data collection and the cultural change across the organization were shared. A few unsuccessful practices during the transformation process, but treasurable learning lessons, were also revealed.

Seminar on Industrial 4.0 : The Fourth Industrial Revolution

Industrial 4.0 is a vision of tomorrow’s industries particularly the manufacturing sector. A seminar was held on 22 August 2015 with around 50 participants. Dr. YC Chau, the speaker, presented the relationship of Big Data, Internet of Things, and Cyber Physical System. These innovative technologies could be connected and transformed into valuable interpretation. Business opportunities and challenges would be created into commercial segment. In parallel, episode of “Made in China 2025” strategy was introduced. During the interactive Q&A session, some was suggested such as new policy put into legislative to prevent leakage or misuse of information. Moreover, apart from sizable organizations, SME should react and position towards Industrial 4.0 at a brisk pace.

CEng Sharing Session

To align with one of our AA’s missions – Professional Development, our ExCo member Lam Tat-ming and Sub-com member Chan Cho-yee, together with some other chartered engineers alumni, hosted a sharing session for other potential candidates on 15 August 2015 on the route to chartership. The scopes of discussion covered from the know-how of application form filling, the necessary requirements of procedures, to the impressive interview techniques. A treasurable experience sharing from the seniors. Wish our alumni every success in their endeavor!

The event was held on 13 August 2015 with about 65 students attended. As past practice, Prof. Man, Director of Studies, highlighted the course structure and other particulars. Mr. Steve Frankland, Dr. Andrew Ip and Dr. Francis Lau touched on other various subjects. 7 ExCo and Sub-com members of our Alumni Association were present at the event. President Elinor Cheuk conducted a presentation to introduce and promote our AA. The feedback was favorable and all students had registered to join our Associateship.

Technical Visit to Kowloon Bay Waste Recycling Centre (Pilot Composting Plant)

The technical visit to the Kowloon Bay Waste Recycling Centre (Pilot Composting Plant) was held successfully on 25 July 2015 with 25 participants. The event started with a presentation conducted by the Green Council. The whole process of waste recycling, its associated end products and future plan of The Government of HK were introduced. After a round of Q&A, a guided tour was then arranged to let the participants to on-site visit the entire plant facilities including the pre-treatment area, in-vessel composting units, curing pads, products screens and biofilters. All participants reflected that the interactive discussion and knowledge sharing enhanced much this technical visit.

Sai Kung boat trip
Sai Kung boat trip

After a short period of typhoon signal no. 8, we were delighted to see sunshine at Sai Kung on 11 July 2015. Without waiting after anchor at Nan Fung Bay, we jumped into the clear water and swam towards the sandy beach. Youngster took the challenge to try wakeboard the first time. After a few trials, she was successful! It got hungry easily after such vigorous exercise, time to enjoy the delicious shrimp,squid and abalone, chicken wing, fried noodles & crab congee. Still have energy, banana boat or paddling the kayak would be the choice. Cool down with water melon and it's time to return home with seagull saying goodbye to you.

Technical Visit to Zero Carbon Building
Technical Visit to Zero Carbon Building

Zero Carbon Building is a project to showcase the state-of-the-art eco building design and technologies locally and internationally. More than 20 participants attended the visit on 6 June 2015. Started with an introduction of the design concept of this building, a tour guide led the visit including active skylight, wind catcher, under-floor displacing cooling, on-site renewable energy installation from photovoltaic panels, bio-diesel tri-generation system and high-volume-low-speed ceiling fan, which participants had a chance to feel its performance. Participants showed great interest and raised a lot of questions. In conclusion, participants enjoyed the visit and learned a lot of environmental knowledge.
